NHRC issues notice to UP government and DGP in journalist's murder case

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the UP government and the state's director general of police in connection with the murder of a journalist for allegedly publishing news on the sand mafia in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, the journalist shubham used to work for Hindi daily 'Kampu Mail' published from Kanpur. The official said that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognizance of the media reports on the murder of the journalist and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh.
The murder incident took place last week. The Commission issued a statement saying, "In the democratic system of government, the media is considered as the fourth pillar, which cannot be allowed to fall prey to anti-social elements in such a ruthless manner."
The commission statement said that Tripathi was reporting about illegal sand mining in the district and his life was in danger. Allegedly his opponents had also filed a complaint against him before the District Magistrate.
